complete encyclopedia of needlework

Question:

I was wondering it anyone had a copy of this book.  It is very good?  Is it worth the money?  I would like to have a reference for different stitches, etc. does this book do that well?  It is in the Crafter’s Choice catalogue for this month and I still need to buy one book fairly soon, and this one looks quite good.  Oh, does anyone think that they might carry Julie Hasler’s new book next month? (it is next month it comes out, right?)     Thanks,         Heather

Response:

If it is the Encylopedia of Needlework written by Theresa de Dillmont, then yes, it is an excellent reference – a very old one – but tried and true.  The pictures (at least my copy) are sometimes a tad dark and difficult to see, but it is filled with all manner of needlework that can whet your appetite to try new things.  If you get bitten by the bug, then you can purchase a more up-to-date version of the techniques in the area of your interest. For anyone interested in needlework in all its forms, this is a must-have reference. Yes, grab it.  Its a wonder source for all kinds of needlework.  Have a couple of Julie’s books, what is the new one coming?  I’ll have to check my catalog.  Only need to order one more to satisfy obligation.   Fahdutnik – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was wondering it anyone had a copy of this book. Or could it be the Readers Digest I think complete Book of needlework? It is a nice one too. I work at a library and they have this one there. It does have different needlework in it. Maybe you could go to your local library and see if which one it is before you buy.    I just bought "The Complete DMC Encyclopedia of Needlework" by Therese deDillmont, copyright is 1978.  It says that it can be ordered directly from the publisher… Running Press 125 South Twenty-second Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania   19103 It seems like an excellent book, from the chapters I’ve read so far.  But I’ve only read a couple.  Maybe someone else has this book and can give better information. I have that book! I adore it, with an absolute passion : it’s the one book I refer to first, every single time :) It’s got everything in it. Knitting, tatting, crochet, embroidery on linen, and velvet, filet lace, needlemade lace, and so on and so forth. How to do plain sewing, whitework… It could use an index. That’s my only gripe. Emma who is, at this moment, tatting lace for her wedding dress from this book :)

Response:

If it is the Reader’s Digest Complete Encyclopedia of Needlework, it is definitely a good reference book IMHO.  DH bought this for me a while back and it has been a good general reference, both for refreshing my memory on techniques I don’t use too often and learning new things.  (For example, when Buttons asked about the rag rugs, I immediately remembered that there was a whole chapter on rag rugs–with several different types and styles explained.) The book has a lot of good general reference material on a lot of topics with good pictures and diagrams as well as thorough explanations.  It would *not*, however, replace books like Janice Love’s Basics and Beyond that concentrate on just one area of needlework.  JMHO YMMV Dawn in Newberry PS–topics in the book range through embroidery, crochet, hardanger, applique, pulled thread, huck embroidery, quilting, needlepoint, crewel, knitting, rug making (many types), macrame, bobbin-lace, netting, and probably a lot more that I’ve forgotten. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Or could it be the Readers Digest I think complete Book of needlework?
