Question:
My daughter is getting married next July and my wife is trying to find sources for MOB dresses. She has looked at a few bridal shop (may daughter has already purchased her dress) but says the MOB dresses she sees look like versions of bridesmaid dresses. She is concerned that "regular" dress shops won’t have "July" type dresses in stock now. The MOG is traveling from out of state in a few weeks and wants the two of them (my wife and MOG) to go out shopping together. Anyone have any suggestions of places to look – we live in the Chicago western suburbs??? Thanks in advance.
Response:
My mom got her’s at david’s bridal. You can see them online at www.davidsbridal.com . Yes, they don’t always have the best customer service, but they do have nice dresses. ( I live in the Milwaukee area, and there are 3 in this area.) T

If I was her, I’d go to Gurney Mills and check the outlets there…. They should have some out of season clothes there.. I found my dress for my daughter’s wedding at a department store at a Labor Day Sale.. It’s was last years dress, but it was such a good deal that I couldn’t pass it up.. She should be able to find something at Marshall Fields in their better dress department.. The summer dresses will be on sale now to close them out.. She might have to go to the Flagship store to find them, so she should call first… Department stores usually consolidate the out of season better dresses to one store and discount them…..

I wore a silk suit I found at Lord and Taylors. The jacket was silk and the skirt was lace (knee-length) It was beautiful. When I bought it I didn’t think the buttons were "fancy" enough so I went to a fabric shop and bought new buttons (they cost almost a s much as the suit which I got on sale!) and took it to the dry cleaners and had them put them on.Only because I didn’t have time!! I guess it depends on the time of day the wedding is. My daughters was at 10am (6/16/01). I am just NOT the long-gown type of person. So the suit worked out great. Good Luck! And God Bless America!! And that can be hard when you’re feeling really excited about the weight already lost, about the new smaller clothes, etc. etc. But at some point that excitement wears off, and then one has to get motivated again. Thankfully my WOE has been such a moderate, acceptable one to me that bearing down doesn’t mean returning to some sort of alien way of eating that I had forced myself into in order to lose weight. Oh JD! I can empathise with you. I am glad you got your ‘butt into gear’! By the way, my wedding was wonderful, and I was at my maximum weight back then. (April 1998, I was 180 lbs) So while having this goal is a great motivator, just remember your wedding will still be a fun, momentus and memorable occasion no matter what size dress you are wearing! I look forward to your further progress. I am so happy today. I lost 4 lb this week, getting rid of the 1.5 lb I gained last week and adding another 2.5 lb for good measure. This gets me to 201. And this is with my TOM a few days away! How did this happen, you ask? I’ll tell you. Last Friday, I went wedding dress shopping for the first time (you know, the wedding, the reason I started trying to lose weight in the first place). I had put it off for as long as I could, knowing that at my size it would not be an easy process (since most bridal salons have most of their sample dresses in size 10 or something around there). We decided to ease into it, so we just went to one store, and it had a dress that I really liked in a size 20, and another in a style that I didn’t really care for but wasn’t too terrible in an 18. The 20 wouldn’t close all the way, but the dress was gorgeous (though not my first pick). The 18 was closer to closing (go figure). I "tried on" one size 10 sample, which pretty much meant standing there with the zipper completely undone and trying to imagine what the dress would look like. Not terribly enjoyable. While I was relieved that I hadn’t had to go dress shopping 35 lbs ago, I was a tiny bit bummed that all of my work had still left me right on the outside of the whole process. But I also knew that, with the wedding not being until April, I could hold off on buying the dress until late September. Meaning, of course, that I could lose some more weight during the next two months. So I then started to wonder how much weight I could realistically lose between now and then. I looked over my numbers for the past few months, and really started kicking myself. Despite the general downward progress, I had gotten into a pattern of two-pounds-forward- one-pound-back. And as much as I would like to tell myself that it was just my weight loss slowing down, I knew that I had gotten sloppy. Definitely not off my WOE, but I had been "treating" myself a bit too often when we ate out, I hadn’t been exercising as much, and while breakfast and lunch were pretty much always on plan, dinner sometimes got a little calorie-heavy. I also was looking at the calendar and saw that my minigoal of 199 by my birthday (August 9) was in danger of not being met, when for months my weight projections had told me that I ought to be at least at 195 by then. But more than anything, I didn’t want it to turn out that my weight loss stopped here. I’ve been on this WOL for nearly seven months, longer than I’ve sustained any weight- loss/exercise effort before. And it had been easy, really, and I still felt good about it, never really deprived of the foods I like, only one or two binges here or there that were emotional eating as much as anything. I had told myself that I had "recommitted" a few times recently, but I knew that wasn’t really the case. So, starting on Saturday the 17th, I cleaned up my act. The Man and I have joined a tennis club, so we played tennis on both Saturday and Sunday. I rode the exercise bike for 45 minutes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I started tracking my calorie intake with LifeForm again, and kept myself to between 1800-1900 calories each day (and realized that I had probably been eating 2300-2500 calories a day, with the excess always coming at dinnertime). ASD is like real life. But the advantage of Usenet is that no one has to be polite and read all the posts, and newsreaders come equipped with killfiles. Life is too short to have to wade through this recent childish crap, so my killfilter is getting a good workout, and I ignore the rest. Hi Janice– I’ve been on Usenet for almost seven years now, so I am unfortunately aware of the negative aspects of human personality <g. What has surprised me and disappointed me the most recently was how some people who had seemed to have their heads screwed on straight got sucked in and perpetuated all of the ridiculousness. When The Usual Suspects start firing at each other, that I can deal with, but when people who contribute a lot to ASD and who are looked to as real stalwarts enter the flame wars, that’s when it gets really sad. It was a large-scale loss of respect for about five people that really made me not want to be around here for a while, not the useless diatribes of the ones that have always shown themselves to be unstable doofuses. You and I and Kay have all been here about the same amount of time, so we all know that this will ebb and flow (in fact I think it’s starting to die out a little now). But as so many people have said in this thread, ASD has become such an important part of this weight-loss journey, and I won’t give it up. I want to see all of us succeed, I really do. And we will! I had read your message about your difficulties recently, and I’m sorry I didn’t respond. I did see that you’ve joined WW, which should be a good thing and I hope works out for you. As I said in my first message in this thread, the most important thing for me has been that every day I am eating the foods I like, and am eating at a calorie level which satisfies me. I can’t eat as much of my faves as I might want, and there have to be trade-offs, but I just think it’s critical that we figure out a WOE/WOL that works that way. While it’s nice to say that there shouldn’t be an emotional connection to eating and foods, I think it’s easier to figure out a way to *control* that emotional connection then to try and break it outright by avoiding the foods that in the past have made one feel good. In fact, I would argue that by having learned to only eat the right amount of cereal, chips, breads, and other goodies (and to choose whole-grain versions whenever possible and to eat them in concert with low-fat protein and veggies, as well as get lots of exercise), I actually have lessened that emotional connection. If I wasn’t eating those foods, they’d be all I’d be thinking of. And that’s when diets fail. (not that these last few paragraphs have anything to do with your current situation–I just got in a real spout-off mode!) I know you’ll find the right path for you. You’ve got the determination, and you’ve got all of us ready to help you in whatever way you need! –jd 239/201/139 started 1/2/99 http://www.jdland.com/how1.html <–journal/stats Thanks JD. I keep an eye on you too, and I had already
missed your presence here. In fact, I was on the point of posting to ask if you were still out there somewhere. I know ASD has played a big part in my progress so far, and has taught me an enormous amount about food, exercise, diet and so on that I didn’t know before. It’s also taught me a few things about people, not all of them positive! If people like you stop posting because of the conflict which is going on between certain others, then the character of the newsgroup will be taken over by the off topic and unsupportive posts and other "genuine" asd-ers will start to leave too. Please continue to post – I know I intend to, apart from a break coming up shortly when I will be away for a couple of weeks. Presently, as has happened in the past, the group will settle down to its real business again. I can weather it out, but I do feel sorry that we may lose newbies who happen to drop in at a time when there is a lot of negative posting going on. Thanks for the comments. I did go to David’s Bridal, and must say that I was not terribly impressed with the selection/quality of the dresses. I’m afraid I’m not a last-minute kind of gal–considering that my wedding is going to be in a city where not a single person who will be at the wedding actually lives, I’m going to have enough headaches. I’d much rather get the dress out of the way then leave it until a few months before and then be caught not being able to find a dress that wouldn’t be settling. You’re so lucky that yours worked out the way it did! On the other hand, I *am* getting married in Las Vegas, so I have set this wedding up to have far fewer headaches than it would have otherwise. dress? I was married last October and ended up finding the perfect satin dress with a long train in my size. It looked perfect on me and the best thing was that they had a wide selection of all the dresses in all sizes in the store. My beautiful dress, surprisingly enough, was the only one there and happened to fit perfect. It was also my dream gown that I had always wanted. It was very simple and very elegant. We topped it off with a beautiful blusher veil. The only thing that had to be done was a bustle was added so I could hold up the train. My grandmother did that in about fifteen minutes. The best part was my dress only cost me 200 dollars. What a difference considering my cousin, who got married in June, is a size 1 and had to have a dress specially made for her. I cost over $1500. Also, you have a little more time than you think to find that perfect gown. I actually bought mine two months before the wedding. In the meantime I had gone to bridal shows where they also had a wide selection of gowns in a variety of sizes. Don’t feel like you have to get the dress in September. Otherwise you will be staring at it for 7-8 months, wanting to try it on constantly, and feeling enormous pressure over staying at the right weight to make sure it fits. Believe, that can be too stressful. << * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

I now realise I hadn’t looked at it properly and had assumed it wasn’t the right sort of thing for me. I bought the At Home version because I don’t want to go back to classes, although I have done classes many times in the past. Recently I have begun to lose motivation with my self-devised WOE (which is a very sensible WOE and works very well when I keep to it), probably through boredom, certainly not through lack of results. After reading a lot here about other people doing WW123 I got my books out of the cupboard, dusted them off, and really took a proper look at what is involved. I decided I will give it a go to introduce a little change and a little more structure into my WOE. I haven’t started yet – I intend to start the programme as soon as I get back from holidays in mid August. I feel that doing it then will help to minimise any hiccups if it proves that the WW programme means slightly more calories than my current WOE. Starting in August doesn’t mean pigging out until then – I am still clinging on to my existing WOE and holding my own (I hope). Thanks for your supportive message J 233/188/136 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Hi Janice– I’ve been on Usenet for almost seven years now, so I am unfortunately aware of the negative aspects of human personality <g. I keep an eye on you too, and I had already missed your presence here. Hope to continue hearing from you – I certainly follow your progress with interest (and not a little trepidation in view of your numbers:)) << * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

But truthfully I haven’t been posting much because I’ve been really disgusted by what’s been going on in ASD. (enough said about that) But I always keep an eye on you, Janice, Frank, Mimo, Robert, and Alice (Naomi, where are you?), because I’m as excited to find out how everyone else is doing as I am about my own progress. I have been out of touch too, mainly from overwork, but also ASD doesn’t seem too appetising at the moment (enough said also). Reading what you wrote, JD, hits home (as usual!!!). It is so easy to get complacent, especially when the urgency to lose weight decreases as you get lighter. For me the scale hasn’t moved much at all since January. I *think* I am back on track, and I’m going to use my month long holiday (starts Friday – YAY!) in Italy to help me get back in the ol’ routine with WOE. It’s not that I’ve gone right off my WOE, more that, like you say, I’m not as strict. Exercise will be a problem for me whilst we’re away – it’s going to be mega hot, and I find exercising in the heat difficult. Also, I can’t access weight machines. But I’ll be doing plenty of sightseeing walking, so hope that counts! I’m missing ASD like anything. But I’ve kind of given up on getting back in the groove before we leave, so I’ll leave that for September. I also have a word here for Frank – FRANK! STOP doing the overtime too much! Way to get back on track JD. Have you tried going to an outlet store for your wedding dress? — Foggy 195/180/130 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – (apologies, this is going to be a long one) Wow. And I was rewarded, with the scale showing me 201 this morning. 199 is now so very much in sight, although with next week being TOM I’m not sure I’ll hit it then, but definitely by the first week in August. And I still have that next minigoal of getting to 189 by October 1. It’s still a bit ambitious, but 12 lbs in a little over two months is not totally impossible. I’ve pledged to myself to really stay focused until then, to really put a lot of energy into meeting that goal. We’re doing three long weekends away during that time, so I’ll need to be really vigilant, but I think I can do it. Before my aunt decided to order one for my cousin through JC Penney, I told her just to put any "nice" dress on her. I just cannot imagine spending $100+ for a child’s dress, especially when my bm’s dresses were only $100. I indicated that we’d like white, or another color to match the party colors accordingly. Of course, I know my cousin looks "perfect" anytime my aunt dresses her up, so I felt safe handing over that responsibility. You could try consignment stores for used communion dresses (depending on fg’s age) or just shop around and try to find a pretty white one at a local department store. The designer is Santa Monica, whom I’ve never heard of, but that’s okay with me, the gown was only $475 on sale at David’s Bridal! By the way, they were great with me. Take care! Sue, I understand your feelings about paying retail for items. When it comes to weddings, research and education will be your keys to finding good value. For dresses, there are many different avenues to explore. There is a book called ‘Bridal Gown Guide" by Denise and Alan Fields. The authors discuss the ins and outs of bridal gowns, manufacturers, and getting good deals. Good luck on finding your dress….

No – you aren’t being impatient. I started booking things as soon as we decided on a date. We got engaged September 7, 1996, and got married September 20, 1997. Yes, we just had our first anniversary (read my post about my big cheat!). I KNEW where I wanted the wedding reception – the same hotel ballroom where my mother and stepdad had theirs. I called on October 1st, 1996, and it was booked. I tried every other hotel (in Bismarck, North Dakota, mind you) that had a ballroom, they were all booked through September of 1997. What a bummer that was! We wound up having it at a country club, and everything was beautiful anyway, but the symbolism wasn’t there. About the dress – if you plan on ordering one and not getting it off the rack (at David’s Bridal, or a department store), YES, order it 6 months in advance! A bridal shop cannot guarantee when you will get your dress, especially if it is an odd style or odd size (lower than say, an 8, or higher than, say, a 20), because most of the major companies try to make several of the same style/color/size at one time. When you tell them you’re losing weight, they will not believe you, and insist on ordering a size WAY too big anyway. At the time, I fit into regular size 14 clothes, and they convinced me to order my dress in a 20. I was embarassed, but figured the store knew what they were talking about. I swam in the damn thing, and had to pay $110 in alterations – 1/5 the cost of the dress
I found out through research that many folks in the bridal industry purposely order a dress too big so you HAVE to pay extra for alterations. It’s a total scam, but just remember – IT’S UP TO YOU what size you order
I probably lost a few pounds between the time I ordered and my wedding day, I don’t know – I barely ate at all the week of the wedding. Didn’t get a good meal until the honeymoon! Keep on losing weight if you want – don’t let the dress stop you. Arrange to have a final fitting 2 weeks before the wedding and everything will be fine! Seamstresses (I had a wonderful one, she even lived in my apartment building, so no dragging my dress around, and I could dress in my own place and just walk upstairs in my gown!) are used to brides gaining and losing weight right before the wedding. Even though I didn’t eat the week of the wedding and probably lost like 5 pounds, the dress fit like a dream! I even went out the day before the wedding and bought a new "death bra" (my not-so-affectionate term for those corset-like boobs-to-butt "slimming/breasts on a shelf" devices) that wasn’t so constricting. I also bought a different pair of shoes the day before the wedding, because I felt like my dress was too long. It’s kind of funny – I was in the shoe store with mom, looking at shoes and those white satin purses. I tried on a pair of the shoes I wanted, and the prim ‘n proper saleslady said, "Oh, when’s the wedding, dear?" and I said, "tomorrow." – I will never forget the look of shock on her face. Sorry this has turned into a MAJOR novel here, but I’m so full of wedding experience

If everything doesn’t go perfect on THE day, remember, you have an entire LIFE together to celebrate day after day after day. I would order the dress in the size that you are now. Most of my friends, without trying, found that they lost weight during the year before their wedding days. Congratulations! I lost about 10 pounds without trying. They only way to avoid this problem is to plan tp pay for alterations. You’ll probably need some anyway. I would order pretty close to your size, and then be thrilled to have alterations done whenyou are smaller! and promise me you’ll eat your wedding cake! MaryBrock 225/211/145 LC since 8/3/98

Conggratualations!!!!!!! I understand your delimma on the dress size. But, it’s not that uncommon I think. A girlfrined of mine had her dress made abut s months ahead. She started losing wieght due to the stress. She had her dress altered three differnt times. So if you have a good seemstress it shouldn’t be a problem. Good luck! Memories!!!! lalala One of my bridesmaids was 115 lbs soaking wet when she bought her bridesmaids dress, 3 months before my wedding day. In the meantime, between that purchase and the wedding day, she went on the BC pill. Also in the meantime, she gained weight, but didn’t think about her dress not fitting!!! The morning of my wedding day, she put on her dress (1st time since buying it) and you have never heard anyone wail like she did!!!! She couldn’t zip it up! So, 4 hours before my wedding, she was hightailing it to the nice ol’ lady who altered all of our dresses. Anyway…the dress was altered in plenty of time and the wedding went beautifully, and next month DH and I celebrate 8 years!! The moral of the story…buy big, cut small…..don’t sweat the small stuff!! Congratulations Wummin!!! What wonderful news!!! As for the dress, why do you need to order it six months in advance? Aren’t there places you can get it within just a couple of months before your wedding? That should be plenty of time to do the alterations. Unless, of course, you have something already picked out, and they’ve already told you it will take that long. I bought mine off the rack at a fancy department store for under $300 (of course, that was over 15 years ago), and the alterations only took a few weeks as I recall. So I was able to lose 13 pounds before the wedding and get the dress to fit perfectly … (sigh — back in the days when I thought 130 was overweight … I dieted down to 117 … and now look at me). — KC 196/188/135 Eating smarter since 8/8/98 (reduced calorie/reduced fat/increased protein/low-glycemic/high-fiber/vegetarian WOE)

I suppose I’m impatient…the wedding is at least a year away and I have an appointment Friday to speak with a caterer (I need to set a budget, etc.), I’ve already chosen a reception site (George Peabody Library!!!!!! http://peabody-events.mse.jhu.edu) that’s IF I can afford it and if it’s available when I want. I guess I just want everything to be as perfect as I can and I’m afraid if I wait too long to choose a dress and order it (if applicable), it wont be "perfect." Wummin, You have my most sincere congratulations!
As you may know from my whining about it, one of the many reasons my patience snapped and I finally chose to take control of my eating habits is that I *gained* several pounds after I bought my own wedding dress. Fortunately, I now seem to have the situation under control now. I hope by the time I have my last fitting (maybe two weeks before the wedding?) I’ll have to have it taken IN a little.
…however, this thread is about you, not me.
As someone who has been dealing with weight problems as they relate to wedding apparel, I’d say going to David’s Bridal and getting an off-the-rack dress–possibly as close as a month before the wedding–might be your best bet. Then, in that last month, you’re assured of being able to alter the dress to fit you. After all, if you were to buy a dress and the lose, say, 50 pounds
then the dress would have to be totally recut. The tailor would basically be making you a new dress, and that can be pretty expensive.
Be warned that almost all bridal boutiques will try to get you to buy a few sizes too big in the first place, because they make good money off of alterations. If you lose weight on top of ordering a dress that’s too big to begin with, well….the costs escalate. Needless to say, the longer you can delay before buying a dress, the better. On a side note, if you want me to share any of m ywedding-planning experience, As in all things, this is of course only my opinion. I like to think I’ve gained a wee bit of wisdom over the past two years since we were engaged, but I could also be fooling myself.
Best wishes, good luck, congratualtions again! I wish you all the happiness in the world! =) –Andrea 162/153/135 — "I could get beaten by a sponge! It wouldn’t even have to be an EVIL sponge!" -Zan

Wummin, Wonderful! <G I’m not going to give you any advice on the dress…you should do what you feel comfortable with. One of my bridesmaids ordered a dress a couple of sizes too small. She was from out of town, the dress didn’t arrive until 3 days before the wedding. Even so, the dress was altered in time. Hi there Congrats!! I ordered a pair of hand made boots 2 years ago just after I went on Atkins (round2- this is now round 3) and told the maker that I was losing weight and asked him about it. We decided to make it as if I was 30 pounds less, so he did, and now I am 60 pounds less! It was kindof funny ordering something and saying that I fully expected to be thinner by the time they came- which I was! He was very responsive, it was not a problem. I would expect the same kind of response with the wedding dress. Enjoy! Victoria 192-163-150 lc since 7-8-98

I recommend that you tell the bridal shop that your wedding is a month before it really is. When I got married, the dress was supposed to be in weeks before the wedding. They told me that it didn’t come in until a week before the wedding. This was before I gained weight in the first place, my weight had been stable for years, and still the dress came in much too large. Because it was only a few days to the wedding, it cost me almost as much for their rush alterations as for the dress. I think I was scammed. If it had come in earlier, I probably could have had it altered for very much less somewhere else. — "There’s a seeker born every minute."

CONGRATS!!!! :) I Got married last October. (1 yr. coming up in 3 weeks, yay). Anyway, I went to the dress place about 6 months in advance and she suggested (and you have to ask the place you plan to get your dress when you find one you like) since my weight fluxuates to get it closer to the wedding. So I oredered my dress in August, it came in in September (in the size that I was in August). I lost about 15 more pounds and so a week before my wedding I went in and tried it on, the lady pinned me up b/c i needed it taken in and she had it done in 2 days. It was GREAT!! My dress fit perfectly and she did such a wonderful job so quickly!! :) So look for a dress well in advance (6 months or so is good) then ASK the woman when you find a dress. Tell her that your weight fluxuates and how fast do they get the dresses in and how fast do they alter the dresses. If they alter the dresses rather quickly, it’s best to go as close to the wedding as possible so that less alterations need to be done… if they take months to alter the dress then…. However, if you plan to alter your own dress, then you would have to judge…

Question:
Has anyone been to the David’s Bridal once a year sale? The commercial advertised dresses on sale from 99-300$. I am not really looking at dresses yet, my wedding is over a year away, but I made an appointment figuring if I find the perfect dress for $99 dollars then I will get it, otherwise it will just be for fun. Any thoughts? Katie (and John) Dec. 11, 1999
Response:
I went to the sale in my area, and found that, of course, it was too good to be true. Very few dresses were actually $99. Most dresses were simply "on sale" and the average prices ran from $300-$500, which is still a great price to pay if you find your dream dress. The $99 dollar dresses were orginally $250, the $300 dollar dresses were on sale for $129, and so on. My only true complaint is that the dresses were very shop-worn with noticable imperfections. David’s gets its new line of dresses in Nov-Dec (in my area), and so they are simply clearing out the older style dresses. I’m not trying to be discouragiing. Again, if you find your dream dress at that great of a reduction, go for it! Any imperfections can be cleaned or corrected. Besides if you go try on some dresses, you’ll have a better idea of what you like and dislike. Lisa M. I too went and purchased my dress for $100 off what was on the price tag. I have basically been complaining for months about the prices of gowns, that are worn one day and then put in a box never to be worn again. Therefore, I did not see the purpose of spending more than $300 for a dress. But, I digress. I tried on one dress, and only one, and loved it. There is a small stain on the bodice, but I was told that it can be removed by a professional cleaner. My one complaint is the salesperson that I had to deal with. I got the attitude from her that all she wanted to do was make a sale. I can’t blame her, I did give her some of my own attitude back, but I just didn’t like her approach towards me. I guess what really upset me was that she kept trying to get money out of me. The dress that I bought, doesn’t exactly fit me. But, I am on this intense weight loss program and I am serious about losing the weight. I explained this to the salesperson and she still insist than she order the dress in a larger size. And I point blank told her that that meant that 3 months before the wedding after I have lost 30 pounds I would have to go spend $150 to have the dress altered. No thanks! But, I love my dress and am happy that the search is over. Jennifer

Katie, I haven’t been to one of the sales, but I can tell you that it’s not a once a year thing. I went to David’s to try on dresses a couple months ago. While I was there I filled out their little card "bridal profile" or something like that, and ever since then they send me these notices. I have probably gotten 3 postcards about $99 sales since I went there, which was probably in June or so. So don’t feel like if you don’t go now you’ll miss your chance. But I would go and take a look. It’s nice to have all the styles and sizes in stock so you can try on a variety of dresses in your actual size and get an idea what you like. Best wishes! Question:
I got married July 11 in a David’s Bridal Oleg Cassini dress. I bought it almost a year ago, and then right before the wedding, I saw the very same dress in a David’s ad listed as a "Lady Eleanor". So, if you really care about labels, David’s does seem to be playing some games. BUT, if you like the dress, you can’t beat the price. Mine was fully beaded (the halter neck sheath one in the ad) and held up just great. I felt like a princess in it and the pictures are beautiful.
Response:
All of the gowns at David’s Bridal are their own names. Such names as Gloria Vanderbilt, and Oleg Cassini have never made bridal gowns and are not recognized bridal manufacturers. Davids just makes his own gowns and uses those names, curious. Linda

Dedham, MA. I was a little disappointed to not find any of the dresses I have seen in the magazines. In fact, I didn’t recognize any of the designers names either, ‘cept for Oleg Cassini (sp?) and Gloria Vanderbilt. I found two really beautiful dresses tho – both were Lady Eleanor designs. Has anyone bought a Lady Eleanor? Are the dresses of good quality? I was basically trying on dresses to get an idea of what style would look best on me so I didn’t pay much attention to how it was sewn and stuff. I bought a Lady Eleanor dress that I found at a consignment shop, and I was very happy with it. I saw the same dress at David’s, for about the same price new as the consignment was used, but the fabric and stitching seemed different, even though the label still said Lady Eleanor. I asked about it, and was told that David’s has its own dresses made in the style of the designer ones, and sews the designer labels on, apparently with permission (paying the designer for the right to do so). So I guess that Lady Eleanor, which is a designer name, also makes its own version of the dress you saw, more expensive but maybe better made. My understanding is that David’s basically carries their own private label dresses which are knock-offs of designer dresses. As for the quality, I can ony speak for the beading on the dresses I tried on, and the beads and sequins were sewn on, not glued on. I didn’t take a good look at the stitching though…maybe someone else can comment on that. For me, the price was hard to beat and that was pretty much all I cared about. That and how it looked on me. I went shopping for a wedding gown this weekend at David’s Bridal in Dedham, MA. Question:
Today I went dress-shopping for the first time. I was prepared ahead of time – I’d made appointments at various places, and planned to visit most of the bridal shops in my area over the next few days. So my aunt and I took off this morning, bouncing over icy streets to David’s Bridal. Where I tried on two dresses, and bought the second one. The service was friendly as could be – the salesperson was not pushy, just told me her name and said to flip the gowns I wanted to try on over the rack and she’d take them into the dressing room. When I was ready, she handed me 1-inch heels in my size and a strapless bra in my size, and then (most importantly) left me and my aunt alone. When I said that the dress would need some alteration, our salesperson had the woman who does the alterations come out and take a look at what needed to be altered, and give us an estimate on how much we’d have to pay for it. She found the perfect veil to go with the dress – when I was concerned about wearing a veil in the first place because my hair is very short, she assured me that this "tiara" style veil looked good on pretty much anyone. And it did look good. Especially with the dress. Anyway, after weeks and weeks of dealing with surly salespeople at other stores, it was very refreshing to get such friendly and helpful service. If you’re in Chicago, or around Chicago, I highly recommend David’s Bridal on Harlem between Montrose and Lawrence. Our salesperson was Lucille and she was just exceptionally helpful and friendly. Since the only things I’ve posted so far have been about our reception-site problems, I thought I’d share something nice that happened regarding our wedding. Hi! I also had a great experience at David’s Bridal in Machester, CT. I went on Saturday (also had an appointment) and the place was packed! Although I had to share my consultant, she couldn’t have been more helpful! I tried on many, many dresses (going for more of an informal look, so there were many dresses even from the bride’s maid’s section) and she gave me her own opinions and advice on most of them (also lent me heels and a strapless bra
I finally found a dress that was just perfect for me – for a great price ($249 with $50 off!) and all I have to do is get it hemmed! Just thought I’d share that with everyone – ’cause I’ve heard some bad stories of other David’s Bridal stores. Good-luck to everyone out there who is searching for that perfect dress!!! Question:
Since I have been slammed and berated about my comments on David’s Bridal I thought I would make some points. A. I do not work for a bridal shop, I hate them. One of my friend’s works for one and another ex-roomy works for David’s in Birmingham, Alabama. B. We shopped at their store to try on "looks" in our sizes.
So you’re one of those "everyone, and I mean everyone" who tries on the gowns, thus making them not worth buying… hmmm… So I should feel bad for buying a gown that YOU tried on, since *you’re* too good to buy said gown after trying it on. I see.

To support Courtney’s explanation: This particular location would be one of those "not as great as they make it sound" David’s. I was very disappointed in my visit, especially after all the raves here on the groups. If you’re in doubt, it can’t hurt to check out your local David’s. Surely, there are only a few bad apples. (This particular one is in Hoover.) I can recommend the big shop in Anniston, AL, though — they also carry a range of sizes and seemed to have more selections (late Dec 95) if you’re still looking. — Josie mccraryj $ aspire.cs.uah.edu

I think it is great if you got your gown there, but they are not the end all of bridal stores. D. I can place a number of comparisons up about styles and manufacturers and you can judge for yourself. First of all take Alfred Angelo, since someone mentioned it. Their style 1242 sells at most bridal stores for around $600.00, you can get a deal on that gown almost anywhere for $570.00. The David’s copy sells for $549.00 and it is in poly satin, not silk shantung. As a matter of fact you can get the copy from Alfred Angelo for less than $400.00 that is better made, and has better workmanship. I am not defending Alfred Angelo. Take Mori Lee for example. Look at style 233, the same gown in poly satin, again, sells for only $30.00 less than the original at David’s. Question is, did David’s improve on the styles and make when they copied? Perhaps yes and not. So look for yourself. My point is that when David’s first opened their warehouse in Florida they did have great bargains. You could get designer gowns from reputable designers at less than 1/2 price, but not now. They are just another store. I like them to try on looks in my size and then go around with friends and find what seems to be the same but at better quality and pricing. Sorry if I offended anyone. It is my impression that newsgroups are for comments and discussion on relative topics. Not to be killed when you take a position, no matter how truthful, that may not be your view. There are those who love David’s and that is fine. The question was "anyone ever heard of David’s Bridal" and they wanted some hints and experiences. I just do not feel that you get a bargain at David’s. By the way, my friend who works there says that they make a fortune on their alterations, which they really charge for. Some bridal shops will give you free alterations with a good price. Just shop around. Courtney
